Photograph by Stefano Unterthiner @stefanounterthiner. A Lesser Kestrel left its nest, located in an abandoned house, while the chick is calling for more food. The Lesser Kestrels are often nesting in urban areas, as they provide nesting sites and are usually surrounded by agricultural fields, securing food resources. Matera, holds one of the largest colony: about a thousand couples are nesting every springtime in the ancient town. A film by @mattiasklumofficial While working on our documentary "Vamizi -Cradle of Coral" we followed a few intriguing charachters as they did research and tried to save one of our planets most incredible marine ecosystems for the future! World champion freediver William Winram and biologist Tessa Hempsen are both featured in this short sequence. Please go to @mattiasklumofficial to meet the gray reef sharks of Neptune's Arm! Vamizi, is one of the northernmost islands in the Quirimbas Archipelago off the coast if Mozambique. Vamizi is home to some of the world’s oldest and most pristine coral reefs – a virtual wonderland of marine biodiversity. The Southern Equatorial Current meets the African continent here, bringing with it warm waters and an upwelling of rich nutrients. Sheltered by the coral reefs, the area is an undersea nursery, a critical breeding and birthing ground for hundreds of species of fish and marine mammals. #mattiasklum #vamiziisland #protectbiodiversity #freediving #mozambique@mattiasklumofficial @natgeo @natgeotravel @irisalexandrov @mattiasklumofficial @williamwinram

Photograph by @simonnorfolkstudio A bi-eyed husky – with one blue and one brown eye. Photographed in the Kamchatka Peninsula, far-eastern Russia. The use of the term 'husky’ is recorded from the mid nineteenth century for dogs kept by Inuit people. They are an ever-changing cross-breed of the fastest sled-pulling dogs. During the 1930s the Stalinist authorities targeted every vestige of ‘non-soviet’ culture, including native dog breeds. They considered sled dogs outdated creatures that should be replaced by motorised transport, however when their mechanical machines got stuck in the snow they realised the true value of these these remarkable animals. snow tracking mountain lion, utah. Photo by David Chancellor @chancellordavid Residential and commercial development is reducing mountain lion distribution through habitat alteration and destruction, particularly along the western border of the Wasatch Mountains in northern and central Utah. It is in these mountains that the first work with mountain lion in Utah was conducted by houndsman and district Predatory Animal and Rodent Control agent, Edward Connolly, who used snow tracking to evaluate predation rates and prey selection. The advent of radio-telemetry in the 1960’s allowed us to have a much more detailed view of mountain lion behaviour. As a predator of mule deer, elk, bighorn sheep, and livestock, many hunters and farmers consider them to be a pest. However, when prey survival is not a concern, they are considered as a trophy game species. Under both conditions, the ability to estimate and track changes in local populations is now more than ever crucial to the survival of the species. Photo by @amytoensing (Amy Toensing). West Bengal, India: This is Dhakti Dashi, a Bangladeshi widow who has lived in the back of an ashram for over a quarter century. Widowhood in some parts of the world marks a “social death” and a woman is expected to live in mourning for the remainder of her life - but these expectations are fading and laws are starting to be enforced to protect and empower women. Learn more about the issues surrounding widows in India, Uganda and Bosnia in the February edition of @natgeo magazine. Photo by @haarbergphoto (Orsolya Haarberg) I love the birch forest growing along the Scandinavian treeline as it changes it's face rapidly in the dramatic winter weather. Snow can come from all directions, one day falling lightly like white feathers from the sky, the next hitting your face like small needles in wild winds traveling parallel to the ground. Sometimes the snow lays like a thick carpet on the branches of the trees or covers the upright stems, creating a ghost forest. Occasionally it rains too, which then freezes immediately in close-to-zero temperatures, and the tinkling sound of the crackling ice suddenly fills the seemingly dead forest with life. These scenes and sounds surrounded me every morning and evening earlier this winter, while passing the forest on my way up to the mountains of the Swedish Sarek National Park, photographing reindeer and ptarmigan. Our longterm project in this area will soon come to an end—this trip was one of the last ones photographing for our upcoming book about the Laponia World Heritage Site that will be published in the autumn. Follow @haarbergphoto to see more photographs from this trip and following ones and don't miss our updates about the book that we will start posting later this year. #sarek #sweden #lapland #laponia #landscapephotography #birchforest@thephotosociety

Photo by @gabrielegalimbertiphoto - Walking on the Bund is of the must-to-do things on your trip to Shanghai. Strolling along the promenade allows you to have a clear view of the Pudong Skyline. You can see people doing different activities like kite flying and tai chi practicing. Most of the kite flyers are local retirees or young kids. They fly kites for fun as well as for the purpose walking and exercise. They bring their own hand made kites which are various in type. The most common are bird-like and classical diamond, but you can often see more unique and creative shapes of kites. #shanghai #bund #pudong #kite #kites #china #promenade

Photo by @BrianSkerry. Life thrives within the kelp forest on Cortes Banks, located approximately 100-miles off the coast of San Diego, California. Cortes Banks is an underwater mountain range, rich with nutrients, that has yielded a unique habitat of kelp forest and surf grass on the seafloor, and has enabled a variety of pelagic marine life to thrive in the waters above. Places such as Cortes Banks are vital to the health of our planet, processing carbon and giving back oxygen. Diving in places like this is like swimming through a kaleidoscope, with color and light constantly changing. Scientists state that, in order to have a healthy planet, we must protect at least 40% of Earth’s oceans. Currently only about 3% is protected. Coverage from a story in the February issue of National Geographic Magazine (@natgeo) about the value of protecting ecosystems in US waters. To lean more about creating ‘Blue Parks,’ check out the February issue of @NatGeo Magazine and to see more photos of special underwater places, follow @BrianSkerry on Instagram. @thephotosociety @natgeocreative #cortes #banks #san #diego #ca #cali #marine #ecosystem #underwater #photography #nature #photooftheday #united #states #preserve #national #geographic #nat #geo #climatechange #climate #change

Photo @andy_mann // Marine biologist and free diver, @cainedelacy, sets up a shot on a large, pregnant Oceanic Whitetip Shark, assessed as critically endangered in the Western Central Atlantic due to enormous declines in their population. Some studies show a decline of over 99% in the last 30 years. For three years I've been working in the Bahamas with great organizations and biologists to tag and track pregnant female Whitetips in hopes of learning where this evasive, pelagic shark goes to give birth. It is an absolute honor to be in the water with this amazing shark.

Photo by @renan_ozturk // This man, Winfred Rembert, was violently attacked and hung by a rope in the 1960's, one of the only currently living survivors of a lynching in America. 4,000 African Americans were killed in similar acts of racial terrorism during that era after the emancipation of slavery and through Jim Crow. ~ Counterintuitively, he is not the hardened man he looks in this picture. At his core he full of forgiveness, sharing his story through his hand nailed leather murals. ~ "There ain't a person in the world who has reason more than I do to hate. I got a reason to hate. But guess what... there ain't a prejudice bone in my body. I wanna live, and I wanna let live." -Winfred Rembert ~ Part of the #ashestoashesfilmproject that @taylorfreesolo, her father @todd.rees and myself have been directing and producing this past year. The film is about Winfred and Dr. Shirley Jackson Whitaker, two individuals deeply affected by racism in America that are using art to heal.
