Iphigenia and Other Daughters sent me scrambling for classical symbolism. The dagger plays a pivotal role in much of Greek drama, this one is no different. So the red dagger creates a pivot point for the stag, which represents sacrifice and offering and a favorite form for Greek Gods to appear in. The final poster had a lot of input from the director, Maria Sea Kaminski, I'll post the final next (this was my favorite version)

The theme of this performance was that it focused mainly on the writers, Maria Irene Fornes and Tina Howe and the time and place they were working in, New York in the 50's. My vision was that the sky would become the positive shape and the cityscape, usually front and center, the negative, with the sky sort of seeping down.

Orlando is a sprawling, multi-millennium epic, fortunately filled with evocative imagery to pull from. This ended up being one of my favorites from the season. @uwdrama 2016/2017

"As You Like It" - this was a tricky poster, unlike much of Shakespeare there aren't many iconic visuals in this play - except for the grand romantic gesture of posting love letters on every tree in the forest. In some ways this is two posters, the meta poster and that poster nailed to the tree. @uwdrama 2016/2017 season.

This is the version of "The Inexplicable Redemption of Agent G" that @uwdrama went with. It's full on, like Qui Nguyen's play is. I haven't had the guts to ask our mutual friend if he likes these posters. There comes a point when a designer chickens out in the face of someone he admires... I'm currently at that point. The question for you is, which do you like better?

I'd never seen anything by Qui Nguyen but we have a mutual friend and I felt I had to do right by him. His work manages to be absurdist, cartoonish and deeply moving all at once. Reading the script left me feeling like I wanted to tackle his genre bending style with some subtlety. The client @uwdrama wanted a punchier, crazier version of the poster. This one was put aside and we went with the next one coming up in my feed.

Part of the challenge of designing these poster before the season is that I don't have any idea what the actors look like, so I rarely represent them in the posters. In this case though it was key to have the figures here to hint at the time period and help walk us into the scene, which represents the very surreal world in which the play takes place. @uwdrama #mapleandvine

"Pippin" is another play with a long complex character arc. It's a drama, a comedy and a musical. The challenge here was to capture the highs and lows of Pippin's story. As you may or may not have surmised, there's a duck involved, which here helps represent the hero's journey.

For the play "Sueño" for the @uwdrama 's 2016/2017 season. The story about controlling one's destiny by locking it away in a tower.
