The City of Sarasota will continue its longstanding tradition of celebrating #ArborDay on Friday, April 28 at 9 a.m. at the historic Bidwell House, 1260 12th Street, with a tree planting ceremony. Mayor Willie Shaw as well as the area forester for the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services will discuss the significance of Arbor Day and the importance of maintaining a healthy tree canopy. This is the 31st year the Arbor Day Foundation has recognized Sarasota as a Tree City USA. During the Arbor Day celebration, an exciting new tree giveaway program will be unveiled. Sponsored by the City of Sarasota, in partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation, the Community Canopy program will offer a limited number of trees free to city residents starting Friday, April 28. Residents will be able to request one of four species. Also, using a web-based tool, they will be able to strategically locate where to plant the tree on their property to gain optimal energy savings. The tree will be mailed to the property in a one gallon container. It is estimated 125 trees will be given away. Each tree will be native and locally sourced. The program is financed by the City’s recently adopted tree replacement fund, which collects a portion of tree removal permit dollars to be used for urban canopy protection programs. A white Geiger tree will be planted at the Bidwell House during the Arbor Day ceremony. A representative from the Historical Society of Sarasota County will receive the tree and discuss the importance of trees, history, and the Bidwell House in the community. #cityofsarasota #sarasota

Congratulations to Susan Blake! As our Infrastructure Information Coordinator in the Utilities Department, Susan is an expert in her field and was invited to present at a public sector GIS mapping conference held recently in West Palm Beach. She discussed how the City of Sarasota recognized the need to go digital with inspections at utility construction sites. Susan also explained the coordination required to convert us from an antiquated paper system to a digital solution built upon using GIS. We appreciate Susan’s expertise and the opportunity to help others in local government learn from our experiences. #Sarasota #CityofSarasota #GIS #Utilities
