Swipe >>. . This pollinator is the Halictid bee, commonly known as sweat bees. Thanks to Vince Tepidino, USDA ARS, Bee Biology and Systematics Lab in Logan Utah for the following information. Pollinators have distinct foraging characteristics – some are specialists that collect pollen from flowers of just a few kinds of plants. Others, like the Halictidae (sweat bees), seem to be "anti-specialists". To paraphrase the early 20th century humorist Will Rogers, they have never met a flower they did not like, and they rarely find one whose pollen or nectar is unyielding. Such generalists visit a wide variety of flowers and often seem to do so indiscriminately. Variety seems to be the spice of their foraging lives. . There are problems for generalist foragers. One difficulty is metabolizing the contents of pollen grains of different plant species. While pollen grains contain most of the nutrients required by adult bees to mature and rear their offspring, plant species are by no means uniform in their pollen constituents. Indeed, pollen grains of some species contain toxic compounds. Thus, digesting pollen from many flower species, as generalists must do, may require more sophisticated metabolic and detoxification systems than possessed by bees that specialize. Another problem for generalist foragers is learning how to manipulate flowers of many plant species, each unique in floral morphology. Several studies have shown that workers of social bees such as honeybees and bumblebees forage less efficiently the more flower types they visit. Social bees solve this problem by having individual workers specialize on different plant species, rather than generalize. The hive is thereby, generalized in its flower diet. . In contrast, in halictids, even though many species display rudimentary social behavior, individual foragers are the generalists. Learning in halictid bees has not been studied, but their ability to forage indiscriminately may signal that they are the unrecognized geniuses of the bee world. The plant of the patient...Asparagus! I've been gently tending to this fella for about a year & a half now. I moved him in as a bushy fern & have been patiently waiting for the day when I can begin to harvest the spears. At the end of summer I cut back the foliage to about 3-4cm and covered what was left with compost & straw. I was concerned that I may have been doing the wrong thing (which is why I didn't cut it level with the soil) but followed the golden advice of @organicgardenermag & looky here...spears! #tasyounggardenerscollective #tasmaniangardeners #tasmaniangarden #vegiepatch #veggiepatch #backyardgardener #backyardgarden #organicgarden #urbanfarmer #grownyourownfood #asparagus #vegetables

23/4/17 Walking around the neighbourhood looking out for rare edibles and stumbled upon a treasure trove of an open field with mounts of different coloured butterfly peas (blue, white, lilac) growing. In a field of wild grasses, the well-spaced mounts look like they've been planted there by a modern-day Mendel trying his/her hand at crossing different varieties. Been looking around for the different varieties, and was happy to find numerous dried pods on the lilac coloured plant. Happy to share if anyone want some! #guerillagardening

Long day at work and I need to recharge my energy with some gardening thingy. So I clean containers with spent tulips and sow and this short and sweet carrot 'zanahoria'. This type of #carrots should grow in heavy soil but I planted them in a container with very well ammended soil. The container was a home for pretty pink tulips. Bye beauty and hello yummy! They should be ready in 68 days! #zanahoria #zanahoriacarrot #growyourfood #organicgardening #vegetablegarden #usdazone7 #spring #veggies #veggiegarden #carrot #rootvegetables #backyardgardener #containergardening

I am not planning to save many tomato seeds this year since I have enough seeds for next 5 years. There are several varieties I want to save though, because the seeds came vary short because of their rarity. I bagged this plant with a fabric sack to prevent hybridization. Tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants have self-pollinating habits, which means you do not have to make a border to prevent cross-pollination, but mine grow very close to each other. Therefore, there is a possibility that varieties might be mingled. Also, I am trying 4 different dwarf and determinate types of tomatoes for my mom as she lost her heirloom tomato strain. I planted them in groups isolated; thus, I will not worry about bagging them. #tomatoes #nofilter #nofilterneeded #garden #thehappygardeninglife #backyard #backyardgardener #happy #organic #healthy #growsomethinggreen #grow #growyourownfood #gardenplantlover #lovemygarden #kitchengarden #gardenactivist #nature #urbandecay #seedsnow #healthyfood #arkansas #littlerock #spring #mygarden #urbanorganicgardener #urbangardenersrepublic #ediblegarden #mybhg #gardeningtips
